April’s Child Abuse Prevention Month – Building A Hopeful Future, Together
Dallas County Coalitions (Children’s Advocacy Council, Community Partnerships for Protecting Children and 4Rkids Early Childhood Iowa recognizes the importance of community-based support for all children and families during National Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month in April.
The theme of this year’s awareness and impact campaign is “Building A Hopeful Future, Together.”
Children who live in families with access to economic and concrete support are less likely to experience abuse and neglect. And yet, too often our society thinks of raising healthy children as a parent or caregiver’s responsibility alone. This simply isn’t true. Community support and partnerships can help lighten the burden on families and strengthen communities from the ground up.
This month, and all year long, you can help Prevent Child Abuse America advance family-centered prevention programs and policies by taking action in the following ways:
- Wear blue on April 5th, Wear Blue Day, to show support for children and families. Post a photo or video on social media and include the #WearBlueDay2024
- Follow Dallas County Children’s Advocacy Council on social media and share posts throughout April. Encourage friends and family to do the same. Use the hashtags #GrowingBetterTogether and #CAPMonth to signify yourcommitment to helping children, families, and entire communities to thrive.
- April 12 : Fritter Friday 8-10 – Every fritter you purchase benefits Dallas County Children’s Advocacy Council! Waukee Hy-Vee, 1005 E Hickman, Waukee
Respectfully,
Dallas County Coalitions

Mental Health First Aid Course Offered April 3
ADEL, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will provide Mental Health First Aid Training for those working with Adults on April 3, 2024, at the Dallas County Extension Office.
“Research from the National Institute of Mental Health shows that nearly one in five adults lives with a mental illness,” said Demi Johnson, behavioral health program specialist. Additionally, 123 people die by suicide each day according to recent data from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
“Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has responded to these alarming statistics by offering Mental Health First Aid. This program provides adults with tools they can use to identify when a person in their life might be struggling with a mental health and/or substance use problem,” Johnson said.
Participants will also learn how to connect people to appropriate support and resources when necessary. A five-step action plan will be taught to guide participants through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support.
“Everyone can benefit from taking a Mental Health First Aid course, from agribusiness professionals, producers, paramedics, and faith leaders to teachers, parents, siblings, and friends. Learning more about mental health can help reduce the stigma associated with behavioral health problems. When we can recognize signs of trouble, we can help people get the assistance they need,” said Ann Torbert, Regional Director.
ISU Extension and Outreach will offer Mental Health First Aid on April 3 from 8 a.m.-4:30 pm at the Dallas County Extension Office, located on the Dallas County Fairgrounds. The cost to attend is free with limited seating. Snacks/Meals are provided.

Doc’s Hunting Lodge Fire Update
Courtesy of Doc’s Hunt Club 02/27/2024
I hope this email finds you well.
Many of you have probably heard through the grapevine that our hunting lodge has experienced a fire and was destroyed.
Doc’s Lodge has long been a focal point for hunting enthusiasts from across the United States and other countries, providing a gathering place for various hunting groups to relax and share camaraderie at the end of a fun day in Doc’s fields. We empathize deeply with the sorrow brought by its destruction.
Doc’s Hunt Club remains intact and fully operational. Despite the lodge being out of commission, the hunting grounds are unaffected and remain open for business as usual. Doc’s will have plenty of fantastic birds through the end of the season. You can still book hunts and utilize our other facilities, including our clubhouse.
We look forward to seeing everyone out here for the last month of the 2023-2024 season!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We appreciate your understanding and continued support.
Best regards,
– Aaron Nelson

Registration Open for 2024 Rural Housing Readiness Assessment Conference April 10
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has announced that registration is now open for the Rural Housing Readiness Assessment (RHRA) Conference on April 10, 2024, at the Gateway Hotel & Conference Center in Ames.
The conference allows local leadership to engage in panels, keynotes, networking, and idea-sharing around improving housing quality, access, and affordability in their communities.
Highlighting the importance of the event, Scott Timm, an ISU Extension and Outreach Community Development Specialist, remarked, “Iowa’s rural communities are at a critical juncture with housing shortages, high occupancy rates, and aging housing stocks. This conference offers a platform for leaders to share solutions and learn how the RHRA program can drive change.”
The conference will feature discussions on topics like amenity development, investor groups, community beautification, housing rehab, funding sources, new housing construction, and more.
“We look forward to welcoming leaders and community members from across Iowa to join us in this collaborative effort to address rural housing challenges,” says Timm.
The conference stems from the ISU Extension and Outreach’s Community and Economic Development unit’s Rural Housing Readiness Assessment (RHRA) program, which works with communities to identify and assess their unique housing needs. The program has engaged with 54 communities, with 36 receiving a 10,000 grant to kick start housing initiatives from the IEDA grant program.
The conference is being held in conjunction with the Iowa Rural Development Council’s (IRDC) Summit.
For those interested in participating, registration details are available on at: www.go.iastate.edu/RT0C6Q.
