City of Adel implements new flood mitigation system.

Adel, IA (March 11, 2010) - The City of Adel announced today that staff has installed several sections of a new flood control system that will help with flood protection.

Utilizing a new system for the first time, city officials installed approximately 300 feet of the new flood control system yesterday and also prepared about 1,000 traditional sandbags as the Community braces for spring flooding. The new system is quicker and easier to set up and requires fewer personnel to install than traditional sandbagging methods. Police Chief Jim McNeill, also the City's Emergency Management Coordinator, said that he is pleased with the setup of the new system. "I am excited to see the system work better than expected and relieved to know that it will serve the community better as a flood control device than regular sandbagging." The Chief noted.

At this time, City officials are continuing to monitor flood projections and actual river levels. No noticeable rise in the old slough on the North edge of Adel can be seen, but river gages up-stream show about a one and three-quarter foot rise in the river in the last 24 hours.

Staff will continue to monitor the flood projections issued by the National Weather Service and the actual river levels here in the Community and act accordingly.

Additional questions may be directed to the Adel Chief of Police, Jim McNeill at 102 North 10th Street, Adel, IA 50003 at 993-6723 or City Administrator Chad Bird at City Hall at 993-4525.
