This holiday event is sponsored by the Adel Historical Museum to support historic preservation and restoration.
Proceeds from the Holiday Home Tour support the Adel Historical Museum.
There are six stops you'll be sure to want to make. First you'll want to stop at the Adel Historical Museum. Built in 1857 as Adel's first two-story brick school house, this renovated museum show-cases exhibits and furnishings from Adel's past. After you buy your tickets, please take a few minutes to browse the Museum's 8 rooms and gift area which have been decorated for the Holidays.
The Tour:
1. 1129 Main Street • Adel Historical Museum
Eight rooms in the museum are filled with historical artifacts from our town's history. The shop holds many interesting gift items and historical pictures for sale. The featured room this year is the upstairs "northeast uniform room. We have military uniforms from Golden Mitchell, Jim Mitchell, Harry Reves and Lee Straight. They are from WW I and WW II. Also see the musket from the Civil War. Interesting information on the Orton Brothers' Circus, Bonnie and Clyde at Dexter are in this room.
2. 1218 Main Street • Susan Bish
This 1890 Victorian home turned craftsman has been remodeled several times including the family room, sunroom and large front porch with a Victorian inspired mailbox. Susan moved to Adel in 2007 after finishing her career as a high school principal in Estherville and has worked tirelessly decorating her home. The warm and inviting earth tones on the walls throughout the house are a wonderful backdrop for Susan's extensive connection of quilts that she has sewn herself, as well as quilts from her----grandmother and great-grandmother.
3. 1404 Court Street • Jeff and Sonja Ferguson
This four square two st0o/ home was built in 1915 by L. V. Russell and has had 6 owners. Jeff and Sonja purchased the house in 2003. Since moving to Adel and into this beautiful historic house, they have renovated the first floor powder room,' personalized with new interior paint and done extensive work in the perennial gardens bordering the property. Jeff loves to decorate for the holidays- and featured in this lovely home are five trees each decorated with a different theme. One tree is an original 50s silver aluminum tree from Sonja's grandmother. Along with the trees are Dept. 56 Dicken's Village and a Santa collection.
4. 431 North 9th Street • Lee and Kay Struble
Lee and Kay's home was built by W. L. & Verda Tullis in 1920. The Strubles have lived at this address for 30 years. Kay has displayed throughout her home pictures painted by her sister, Norma Herring, as well as collections of McCoy and Roseville vases. One bedroom is designed for little girls with ruffles, dolls, teddy bears, an old school desk and built-in shelves for story books and pictures. Look for the small grape vine Christmas tree made by a dear friend, Marie Atherton many years ago.
5. 904 Cottage Street • Fred and Jo Baldon
Fred and Jo Baldon's beautiful brick home features rich hardwood floors throughout most of the house. The home has a wide open floor plan and the 9 foot ceilings add to the spacious feeling of the rooms. One entire wall in the living room is devoted to the imposing fireplace, floor to ceiling windows and matching bookshelves. Jo loves the efficiency and easy accessibil-ity of her kitchen. A favorite room of the Baldons is the inviting four-season room which includes cozy wicker furniture as well as a wicker ceiling fan. Fred and Jo Chose Mark Heefner as their builder.
