City of Adel Well Prepared for Spring
For Immediate Release:

City of Adel implements new flood mitigation system.
Adel, IA (March 11, 2010) - The City of Adel announced today that staff has installed several sections of a new flood control system that will help with flood protection.
Utilizing a new system for the first time, city officials installed approximately 300 feet of the new flood control system yesterday and also prepared about 1,000 traditional sandbags as the Community braces for spring flooding. The new system is quicker and easier to set up and requires fewer personnel to install than traditional sandbagging methods. Police Chief Jim McNeill, also the City's Emergency Management Coordinator, said that he is pleased with the setup of the new system. "I am excited to see the system work better than expected and relieved to know that it will serve the community better as a flood control device than regular sandbagging." The Chief noted.
At this time, City officials are continuing to monitor flood projections and actual river levels. No noticeable rise in the old slough on the North edge of Adel can be seen, but river gages up-stream show about a one and three-quarter foot rise in the river in the last 24 hours.
Staff will continue to monitor the flood projections issued by the National Weather Service and the actual river levels...

Fun Facts
♣ St. Patrick was born in 385 AD somewhere along the west coast of Britain. At age 16, he was captured and sold into slavery. He escaped at age 22 and spent the next 12 years in a monastery. In his 30s he returned to Ireland as a missionary. He died at Saul in 461 AD and is buried at Downpatrick.
♣ In Ireland on St. Patrick's Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps. In the custom known as "drowning the shamrock", the shamrock that has been worn is then put in the last drink of the evening.
♣ Popular Irish toasts on St Patrick's Day include: "May the roof above us never fall in, and may we friends beneath it never fall out!", "May the sound of happy music, and the lilt of Irish laughter, fill your heart with gladness, that stays forever after!"
